the purpose of hashtags is to make things easier to find. you stick a topic on a post so that you can find it easily later, or so that other people can find it and chat about the topic.

given that both mastodon and pleroma search are not good, hashtags are the most surefire way of finding an old post.

also if you are on mastodon you can put those tag tabs on your profile and they look really sick. it is pretty neat to be able to look at all my pokemon posts in one place easily

maybe you just need to have been from a social network where hashtags actually WORKED (i.e. not twitter) to understand this, idk.

every once in a while we get this "hashtags are sooooooooo useless" discourse and like no hashtags are fine y'all are just not using them (or your instance admins are not doing enough to combat bots that spam hashtags)

people have been against trending hashtags in the past but i mean it literally works.

i can see what's happening in the wide network around me fairly accurately. i can look at pictures of cats. idk dude

@pasty
not doing that was kinda the point, i think, preferring have conversation over "300 cats"
Lili (T'lapka?)

@shmibs i still feel like all arguments against hashtags just fall flat because they are completely optional and everyone can keep not using them

but stop saying that they have no purpose

@pasty
yeh, meant only it's more kind of "culture fight" though rather than not getting how they work, is all, people disliking the world being sorted out like that. "what they do is useless/annoying to me personally"
