@enigmatico @Rasp Hm, I'm pretty sure high-speed internet was already available in 2000, and modems were already getting rare. Y2K already seemed like a silly scare that we couldn't believe we fell for.
This is a rather stupid headline for the era. It's probably the Daily Mail pandering to its older technophobic demographic.
@enigmatico Interesting, I take it by your domain this is in Belgium? I wonder if it was the same in the UK. I definitely already had cable and ADSL available in 2000.
"In 2000 there were just under 150 million dial-up subscriptions in the 34 OECD countries and fewer than 20 million broadband subscriptions." ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_access#History )
So, like 10% of connexions were already high-speed.
I still think this article is dumb even for the time. Five years earlier, maybe, but thinking the internet was a fad in 2000 is dumb.
@Rasp Good to know that even in 2000 the Mail was still spouting nonsense (I was still a little young to pay attention to and critically think about papers at the time :B)
It's pronounced ʁaʁyʁe.
And written RaRuRe, or R3 for short.
